Episode 4: Village of the Angels

Summary

The Doctor arrives in a village in the 1960s that is supposedly cursed - and which is haunted by the Weeping Angels. A child has gone missing and a professor is conducting experiments in psychic phenomena - while the presence of an extra headstone in the graveyard holds the key to a strange mystery. Guest starring Kevin McNally (the Pirates of the Caribbean movies)

Review

David Brown

What kind of audience is Doctor Who hoping to attract these days? I ask this question because last week’s timestream-jumping mindbender was so messy and impenetrable that it can’t have won over many children. And if the Doctor loses the loyalty of kids, then what hope is there?

Fingers crossed, then, that this Weeping Angels-centric instalment turns out to have wider appeal. And certainly, on the surface at least, it has what appears to be a traditional set-up, with its setting in a supposedly cursed 1960s Devon village where a professor is conducting psychic experiments. With a premise like that, it could almost be one of those simple but atmospheric folk-horror adventures from the mid-1970s with Tom Baker as the Doctor. We can but hope.
