David Brown
Credited with ushering in a new golden age of prestige TV in 1999, this much-lauded HBO gangster drama centres on the professional and personal crises of Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini), whose panic attacks lead him to seek help from a psychiatrist.
Although Tony tells Dr Jennifer Melfi (Lorrane Bracco) that he is a waste-management consultant, she is fully aware of her patient’s place within the New Jersey mob. Their sessions offer viewers an intimate window into the psyche of a man attempting to reconcile the demands of family life with the brutal realities of organised crime.
Creator David Chase originally conceived The Sopranos as a feature film, but its six-season run allows him to explore the full, morally cloudy landscape of the Mafia.
