Summary

The catastrophic collapse in 1966 of a coal-waste tip above the south Wales village of Aberfan remains one of the most devastating tragedies in modern British history. The slide engulfed a school and neighbouring homes, claiming the lives of 116 children and 28 adults in a disaster that shocked the world, but the story of what followed has been largely forgotten. Marking the 60th anniversary, this documentary uncovers the little-told story of the extraordinary campaign that emerged in the disaster's aftermath, revealing how a shattered village rose from unimaginable grief to demand justice, challenged the most powerful institutions in Britain, and forced the removal of the coal tips that still loomed above their homes

The terrible facts of the Aberfan disaster are well known. On 21 October 1966, a mountain of colliery waste collapsed onto the mining village of Aberfan in South Wales, crushing a junior school and nearby houses. Twenty- eight adults and 116 children died.

What might be less well known is the long, cruel struggle that followed. The tragedy was only the beginning. This documentary shows in astonishing detail how the community endured not just profound loss but a level of callousness in the official response now. Branded “irrational” in their grief, patronised by the National Coal Board, they fought for years to have the other spoil tips that loomed over their village’s streets removed. One academic argues that the way those in power closed ranks and escaped blame was mirrored in later disasters at Hillsborough and Grenfell.

But it’s the testimony of those with personal memories of the tragedy that really hit home, and in Alex Jones: One Day in Aberfan (available now on iPlayer and Sunday at 8pm on S4C), the One Show presenter gathers more, moving first-hand accounts. A repeat of the remarkable Owen Sheers film-poem Aberfan: the Green Hollow, written for the 50th anniversary, follows on BBC Four at 10pm.
