Summary

More than three years after her last visit, Alex Polizzi returns to The Dukes, a 270-year-old pub with rooms, in the picturesque village of Heath and Reach, Bedfordshire. Alex originally found Sarah working relentlessly in the kitchen, struggling to make a profit in an establishment that begged for character interiors that matched its external charm. Has she managed to turn things around?

When Alex Polizzi visited The Dukes in the chocolate box-pretty Bedfordshire village of Heath and Reach in 2019, she found its owner Sarah hiding in the kitchen, a very large staff wages bill and a failing business. Sarah needed a lot of tough love which, as we know, Alex is well placed to give.

It was an incredible transformation of both pub-with-rooms and owner, but what’s interesting about these return visits is seeing how the massive increase in food and energy prices have hit businesses. Sarah’s break-even point has gone up by 35 per cent, but customers won’t pay that much more to cover it. Alex has some suggestions, of course.
