Remakes are fraught with risk because the history of TV has taught us that, for every Battlestar Galactica, there’s a Minder with Shane Richie. So, re-mining the Ross Poldark novels, four decades after they’d been so successfully adapted in a BBC series starring Robin Ellis, was a real gamble. But screenwriter Debbie Horsfield had some secret weapons in her arsenal, chiefly Aidan Turner and a scythe.
If you can believe it, it’s now been ten years since Turner first smouldered as the Army veteran returning home to his ruined Cornish estate. But an anniversary does at least provide fans with an excuse to rewatch Poldark’s brooding entrance as well as his chance first encounter with a certain Demelza Carne (Eleanor Tomlinson).
