Writer/director Charlotte Regan makes an impressive debut with this charming comedy drama. On an east London council estate, plucky 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) fends for herself after her mother's death by stealing bicycles and duping social services with the help of her best friend. However, her precarious set-up is upended when her absentee father, Jason (Harris Dickinson), returns, and the pair form an uneasy bond by making mischief and taking day trips to the countryside. With an eccentric script and some playful direction, Regan's film steers clear of the clichés of kitchen-sink social realism, boasting engaging flights of fantasy and a pleasing pastel-coloured visual palette. The two leads share striking chemistry, and help Scrapper to deliver a vibrant and distinct portrait of a father-daughter relationship.
