Review

Alison Graham

The mighty Helen Mirren, resplendent in diamonds and furs, adds Catherine the Great to her cupboard of queens in an opulent dramatisation that simply sweats money – it looks gorgeous.

As ever with complicated chunks of history that are boiled down for popular television dramas, everything is explained by characters who bring each other up to date on the plot and background details (“[Catherine] came here when she was 15”).

The chat is interrupted by bouts of ferocious rogering and an icky execution as Catherine, who seized the throne from her husband, makes sure she watches her back. If he can be deposed, so can she.

Everyone is at pains to point out that she’s clever and forward-thinking (“I know it goes against your liberal principles”) and it’s clear she has an eye for the gentlemen, particularly hunky soldier Grigory Potemkin (Jason Clarke), whose Australian accent doesn’t get in the way of his wooing.
