Summary

England v Slovenia (Kick-off 8.00pm). Coverage of both sides' final Group C match from Cologne Stadium, as the line-up for the last 16 continues to take shape. Following a defeat of Serbia and a draw against Denmark, England are guaranteed a place in the knockout stage even if they were to lose this evening, but the performances so far have done little to raise hopes that they can go one better than in Euro 2020 when they were runners-up to Italy, and they will want to claim the win that would see them top the group. Slovenia are in contention to make history and get out of the group stage for the first time since they separated from Yugoslavia in 1991, having drawn both of their previous games in the group. In a positive, upbeat universe, England would have been going into this final group stage match having racked up decisive wins against Denmark and Serbia. That’s the scenario that Gareth Southgate would have dreamt of, allowing him to possibly even blood a few younger players (Kobbie Mainoo, perhaps) ahead of a Sunday-night last-16 match in Gelsenkirchen.

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out like that so prepare for a spot of tension: Slovenia may never have beaten England in their six meetings, but there’s rarely been more than a goal in it…
