Summary

The gritty prequel to acclaimed Italian crime drama Gomorra charts the rise of young Pietro Savastano (Luca Lubrano) in 1977 Naples. He grows up in the poorest areas of Secondigliano and accepts the hard knocks that life sends his way. Riding around the town with his friends on mopeds and committing petty crimes, Pietro dreams of emulating the success of neighbourhood kingpin Angelo A Sirena (Francesco Pellegrino). The young pretender ingratiates himself to Angelo and is introduced to a dark and violent life that tests his moral boundaries. Pietro openly questions his future and wonders if romance with Imma (Tullia Venezia) might save him

Gomorrah ran for five seasons beginning in 2014 and is perhaps Italy’s finest TV drama about organised crime, so this prequel has impeccable pedigree and, on the evidence of these first two episodes, is an intoxicating mix of Mafia epic and evocative period drama.

We’re still in impoverished northern Naples, but now it’s 1977 and future crime boss Pietro Savastano is one of a crew of boys desperate to become men. That means becoming gangsters. So far Pietro and his pals have only got as far as putting a few cars up on bricks and gazing with admiration at neighbourhood bigwig Angelo, whose holdalls full of cash mark him out as a young man to be emulated. When Angelo proves vulnerable and Pietro has the chance to show his worth, the kid finds that crime is a grimy, brutal profession that might just suit him.
