Episode 1: How to Build British: Mini

Summary

An access-all-areas visit to the Mini factory in Oxford, revealing the step-by-step process that goes into creating a Mini Electric, from the pressing of individual metal panels and the construction of its electric powertrain to the painting of the contrast roof

Review

David Butcher

For a country said to have turned its back on manufacturing, Britain still makes a lot of stuff. And seeing how factories work makes for watchable TV, not least in this series about carmakers. For series two we visit more assembly lines and design studios at famous car brands, watching the process from raw metal to showroom, starting with the Mini.

It’s British classic, yes, but a marque now owned by BMW, whose design and marketing expertise helped make it a Union-Jack-branded hit across the world. Cameras follow the Oxford factory at work as a Mini Electric (“The world’s most desirable small car, now with zero emissions”, according to Top Gear) takes shape.
