The Riddle of Iranian Cinema

Summary

Review

Jeremy Aspinall

Making a movie is always a challenge. But in Iran, where artistic expression is severely restricted, film-makers must devise especially creative ways to speak, when faced by rigorous state censorship and the threat of imprisonment and exile.

Iranian-American film-maker Maryam Keshavarz, who was herself arrested while making documentary The Color of Love in 2004, explores this conundrum, and how coded layers of storytelling are a necessary feature of Iranian cinema.
