Review

Frances Taylor

A new young adult drama that comes with the preface “From the producers of Sex Education” undoubtedly piques interest. But this is a horror series rather than a comedy drama, taking the tinderbox danger of mixing teenagers with smartphones to the extreme.

The first five minutes are disturbing, and not just because the story begins at Christmas (it feels like there’s been a scheduling error, but go with it), when a young girl’s fate seems determined by her phone. But what exactly is on there? We soon fast-forward six months to the last day of term for a group of friends who are looking ahead to their new-found freedom, but when Rochelle receives a text with a link welcoming her to a new app, she’s soon in a spiral of putting friendships at risk and facing life-altering decisions.

Although fictitious, it offers a stark warning how easy it is for young people’s emotional vulnerabilities to be preyed upon in the smartphone era.
