Episode 1: Episode #3.1

Summary

The frigate HMS Northumberland prepares to leave port for a 4-month deployment with a crew of 220. Huge amounts of food are loaded onboard along with the ship's new chef, but a fire nearly undoes the entire mission before it's begun.

Review

Jane Rackham

Life on board a Royal Navy frigate – usually a completely closed world to us landlubbers – is an endless source of fascination. How do the crew manage in the cramped conditions? Where do they put their rubbish? What do they do when they spot a Russian spy ship nearby?

This observational documentary follows the 200 sailors who live and work on HMS Northumberland as they start a six-month tour in the Arctic Circle. We see the captain of the vessel dismissing two crew members who fail a random drugs test; emotional moments, because even seasoned officers miss their families; and a scary situation when a fire breaks out.
