Review

David Butcher

Nobody can deliver a line like “Night falls on the African savannah” quite like David
Attenborough. Here, he’s presenting an Anglo-Canadian series with an interesting angle on animal behaviour: what it sounds like, and why.

Don’t worry, the visuals are great too. There’s a sweet sequence in the Arizona desert, where a kangaroo rat tries to ward off a rival by stamping her foot on the ground, like a tetchy cartoon character. When it doesn’t work, she gets into a splendid little flurry of jumping and chasing with the rival, and then kicks sand in the face of an approaching snake for good measure.

There are several fine sequences like that, and we learn things along the way, such as why the extraordinary face of a great grey owl looks as it does and what the low rumble of a mother elephant means.

But it’s that night on the savannah that might stay with you, thanks to a fracas between a pride of lions and some hyenas drawn to the sound of their feasting. It all kicks off.
