Summary

From a young age, 11-year-old son, Max, has identified as a girl and as puberty looms, he begins to present increasing signs of gender variance. When Max was eight, his father, Stephen, left the family home. But as Max's conviction that he's in the wrong body intensifies, his distress escalates, and Stephen seizes the opportunity to return to live at the family home and support his son.

Episode 3: Episode 3

Summary

Vicky forges Stephen's signature to obtain consent for Maxine's treatment at a US clinic, but he has already reported her to the police and she is arrested on her return to the UK. A social worker is appointed to determine what is best for the family, leaving both parents facing the prospect of losing their child. Vicky makes a confession to Paula as she tries to make peace - which Stephen uses against her

Review

Alison Graham

After Vicky made such a precipitous decision last week, she returns home and faces consequence that are potentially catastrophic for a family that’s already tearing itself to pieces.

Soon a whole lot of strangers are looking very closely at Vicky, her husband Steve and, particularly, her 12-year-old daughter Maxine, who was once very unhappy and called Max.

There’s a touch of the crusader about Vicky (Anna Friel) as she insists she did what she did entirely for the sake of Maxine. “It’s my baby’s only chance, I’m going to do whatever it takes,” she moans. As Tony Marchant’s underwhelming drama ends it’s up to Maxine (Callum Booth-Ford) to try to bring everyone together.
