“The time has come to redefine the nature of pain…”. America’s opiod crisis addiction is tackled with some severity by a fact-based drama first shown on Disney+ in 2021. In the mid-1990s, a drug company embarks on a grand new project: to corner the pain-relief market in Kentucky and nearby states by convincing doctors that its new medication does the impossible — relieve pain without causing addiction – which turns out to be untrue.

Aside from the legal implications, the series is concerned with the devastated lives of ordinary people, and that’s where the strongest performances are: Kaitlyn Dever as an injured miner, Michael Keaton as her doctor.

It’s dour but compelling: the quest for justice grips, but the sense of something rotten in US society will haunt you.
