Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy won 17 Oscars and set the bar for blockbuster film-making — and now the small screen is taking on the challenge, returning to Middle-earth for a different take on JRR Tolkien’s material.

Set thousands of years before Bilbo Baggins decided to experiment with statement jewellery, this prequel — featuring Lenny Henry and Peter Mullan among its ensemble — will explore how the titular Rings were forged, the evil Sauron rose to power and the hobbits came up with Second Breakfast. Well, maybe not that last one. Stuffed with lush magical kingdoms, terrifying beasts and quirky little Harfoots, all tied together by a mysterious evil rising in the background.
