Summary

A murder in the heartland of America has strange cosmic connections in a fantastical mystery based on characters from the Green Lantern comics. Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is a veteran member of the Green Lanterns, intergalactic peacekeepers blessed with extraordinary powers. He is teamed up with new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) to investigate a curious case in Nebraska, which could be extraterrestrial in nature. Hal and John must overcome their initial differences to dive into a dark, earth-based conspiracy that creates friction with Rushville's local sheriff, Kerry (Kelly Macdonald).

With echoes of True Detective, this HBO drama makes a case for the untapped versatility of the comicbook genre. Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), a veteran of the intergalactic police force the Green Lantern Corps, reluctantly accepts ambitious John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as his mentee. There’s no love lost between the mismatched duo, with Hal being jaded and careless after years on the beat, and John itching for an opportunity to prove himself.

Of course, John probably expected the job to involve triumphing in an epic space battle, rather than pounding the pavement in rural Nebraska and tiptoeing around guarded Sheriff Kane (Kelly Macdonald). But after a deadly shooting, Hal and John are sent to investigate. Is this a straightforward homicide, or is there a hidden extraterrestrial connection?

Although slightly too snarky at times, Lanterns is a brave reinvention of its colourful and cosmic DC Comics source material – and an intriguing detour from the well-worn caped antics of a typical superhero TV show.
