Review
Jack Seale
Guy Ritchie directs the opening instalment of a plush drama about London’s criminal underworld, but it isn’t the show you’re probably imagining. The scripts are the responsibility of Ronan Bennett (Top Boy, The Day of the Jackal), so the series tries to be a fair bit more serious than your average Ritchie romp. It still, however, has its share of vulgarity and glamorised violence, as semi-regal druglords the Harrigans sense a looming war with their less-poised rivals the Stevensons.
The ruthless, decisive, yet slightly deranged Harrigans live a life of luxury, as does this show’s casting director: Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan play the family elders, with Tom Hardy as their top fixer, Harry Da Souza, a man best described as terrifyingly capable.
