Comic Relief is turning 40. According to Joel Dommett, one of tonight’s hosts who also happens to be reaching the same milestone this year, that must mean the charity appeal is “starting to get grey hairs everywhere and contemplating Botox.” He’s joking, of course. But in these times of more fragmented viewing and a lessened sense of pop culture events being universally shared, Red Nose Day has become a little creaky-of-knee. Ratings and fundraising totals aren’t quite what they once were.

Still, we’re promised “side-splitting sketches” tonight, which — funnily enough, seeing as we’re on the BBC — pay homage to some of the Beeb’s biggest hitters. Strictly Come Dancing, Gladiators, Beyond Paradise and Not Going Out — the latter two enjoying a mash-up involving Sally Bretton (see page 23). Also getting the Red Nose Day spoof treatment is the Oasis reunion. Here’s hoping for French and Saunders as Noel and Liam.
