Episode 1: Alexandria
Summary
The evolutionary biologist takes a train journey across the world's oldest and greatest civilisation, starting at the very end of the Ancient Egyptian empire in Alexandria, before heading south to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan. Alice goes deep underground in search of Cleopatra, discovers how the Romans and the Greeks reacted to the treasures of Ancient Egypt and, on a visit to the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, she learns how a slave became a sultan and built his own fairy-tale caste

Professor Alice Roberts is the latest TV presenter to take to the rails. She’s visiting Egypt for the first time to explore not just the main ancient must-sees, but less-established sites, too: at one point, having just gingerly crossed some train tracks, she admits, “I might have travelled a long way just to look at a mound of earth.” But there are plenty of exciting discoveries to keep her more than happy.
She starts her journey in Alexandria, where she swaps trains for trams to dot about the city. At Kom el-Dikka, she sees how Roman society lived, complete with odeon and hypocaust (ancient central heating) and some lovely mosaics. She also heads west of the city to Taposiris Magna, a 2,000-acre site that’s causing some controversy – one archaeologist believes Cleopatra might be buried there.
Her last stop is to that “mound of earth”, which in fact is a huge dig at Tanta that covers the whole of Egyptian dynastic history. It was first excavated by the celebrated, but now-controversial Flinders Petrie; Roberts says it’s a salutary lesson about not putting people on pedestals. Next week: the Pyramids beckon…
