Who else is starting to suspect that local police officer Caron has Jean’s missing ring stashed away in his desk drawer? The lost trinket is what’s keeping the antiques expert in Sainte Victoire, but with Caron now calling Jean up each time a crime is committed, even inviting her into the interrogation room, it’s a little convenient that there’ve been no ring-related leads.

This week, he’s more concerned with the theft of a valuable painting by Af Klint — an artist about whom Jean knows a great deal. So, she and Dom (who romantics will point out is giving her another reason to stick around in the south of France) start following the clues.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a Madame Blanc’s Guide to the South of France ended up being published as a coffee-table hardback, as this episode is even more Wish You Were Here with Homicide than usual. The central mystery sees a local priest getting done to death with a crucifix, but the main attraction is witnessing Jean and Dom caper around Lourdes in search of a relic stolen from the church.

Before we reach the solution, Dom worries that he’s been friend-zoned, while Jean makes a rare misstep when it comes to her sleuthing skills. And for the second week running, Sue Holderness and Robin Askwith are missing in action. I’d been enjoying their banter, so please bring them back.
