Perhaps because her first marriage ended in heartbreak, Agatha Christie returned time and again to the topic of cheating husbands in her work. Often, you’ll find infidelity revealed at a novel’s climax to have been the secret motive for murder. But here, we begin unusually with a very public recounting of adultery as high-profile tennis pro Nevile Strange admits at his divorce hearing to having cheated on wife Audrey with his new flame Kay.
The gasps from the public gallery are the kind you’d hear on Centre Court, but Nevile is subsequently set to make another controversial serve when he, his ex-wife and new spouse decide to spend the summer at Gull’s Point, the coastal estate of Nevile’s formidable aunt Lady Tressilian (played with an arched eyebrow of disapproval by Anjelica Huston).
The atmosphere is, as you might expect, charged, but into this already heated mix come a batch of typical Christie character types, including an enigmatic valet, an esteemed family lawyer and Nevile’s grudge-bearing cousin. Zero hour is approaching, but which of them is moving inexorably towards their own demise?
