Review

David Brown

This is a police procedural with precious little sign of procedure, so don’t expect incident boards or marathon interrogations. Instead, laconic Leo (Nick Blood) and savvy Bella (Saffron Hocking) do most of their detective work in the car, trading insults and pulling over to quiz suspects in burger bars. The villains are an eccentric bunch, blessed with colourful nicknames and a sharp line in banter.

That, coupled with the recurring use of split-screen to propel the action, gives Howard Overman’s witty thriller the swagger of an early Guy Ritchie film without quite disappearing into his laddish excesses. Beneath the verbal sparring and stylish flourishes lies a warm heart, while a handful of perception-shifting sequences ensure you’ll rarely be quite as certain as you think you are.
