Summary

The DC Comics superhero faces an uphill battle to wrest Gotham City from the vice-like grasp of deranged criminals in a 10-part animated fantasy created by JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves and Bruce Timm. In public, Bruce Wayne (voiced by Hamish Linklater) is the epitome of gaudy success and charm as a money-squandering playboy, a hedonic image he cultivates to separate himself from his masked alter ego. Batman rampages through Gotham on a mission to eradicate crime at all costs aided by trusty butler Alfred Pennyworth (Jason Watkins) and this vigilante attracts the attention of Commissioner Jim Gordon (Eric Morgan Stuart). A prime target is screen actor Basil Karlo, whose fateful decision to change his facial features using an experimental serum gives birth to vengeance-seeking villain Clayface. Meanwhile, pampered heiress Selina Kyle (Christina Ricci) finances her lavish lifestyle as Catwoman and brilliant psychiatrist Dr Harleen Quinzel (Jamie Chung) indulges her dark and depraved desires as the anarchic Harley Quinn

The Dark Knight goes back to his roots in a series based loosely on the earliest Batman comics. Forget the hi-tech Bruce Wayne of recent times — this noirish version sees him in the 1940s, facing Tommy-gun-wielding gangsters, corrupt cops and costumed villains.

The back-to-basics approach works brilliantly from the off, though one suspects you could put a character like Batman anywhere, from the Middle Ages to the Moon, and it would still make for an entertaining story.
