The Repair Shop at Christmas

Summary

The craft experts spread a little Christmas joy, visited by special guests including Helen Mirren, who brings along a dilapidated cello belonging to a care home for people who have worked in the entertainment industry. Also popping in are children's author Julia Donaldson and Rob Brydon, who are seeking a repair to a toy farmhouse given to Julia by her granny. The experts also repair a life-size mechanical Rudolph belonging to Leicestershire Fire Service, a broken 80-year-old sledge for a Northern Ireland family and a tattered carol book that has played a central role as part of a local tradition in Sheffield

Review

Jane Rackham

The skilful artisans craft a piece of Christmas magic as they renovate a new selection of much-loved treasures — including two brought in by celebrities. The Gruffalo creator Julia Donaldson arrives with Rob Brydon, clutching a battered toy farmhouse that she’s donating to a children’s hospice. Close behind them is an excited Dame Helen Mirren (“Oh, it’s just like it is on the TV!” she squeals), who tells a poignant story about a Jewish boy whose cello was cruelly broken by Nazi guards when he fled to Britain on the Kindertransport.

Also awaiting restoration are a family sledge that has been used across generations, a tattered carol book and a life-size mechanical Rudolph belonging to the Leicestershire fire service. All are equally wonderful. You will shed a tear.
