Writer/director Cooper Raiff’s dramedy is essentially a low-key, low-budget indie movie stretched out and chopped up into half-hour bits: perhaps it might have been better as a film.

Hal and Harper (Raiff and Lili Reinhart) are siblings in LA who are both stuck in self-destructive ruts. We soon sense that they are close to each other but toxic to outsiders because of the early death of their mother; when their dad (Mark Ruffalo) faces a life change, the timeline fractures to show how they all got where they are.

It’s softly observed, often raucously funny and doesn’t amount to much, but the fantastic cast make the emotional beats hit hard.
