Candice Carty-Williams’s debut novel Queenie, about a 25-year-old Jamaican-British woman struggling with low self-esteem and casual racism in south London, was a 2019 bestseller. Many compared it to Bridget Jones’s Diary — Queenie also careers from one bad decision (and poor choice of sexual partner) to another — but it’s smarter, darker and, despite its breezy comic air, unflinchingly raw, as is this eight-part adaptation.
If, like Queenie’s auntie, you blanch at mention of the “V” word, this might not be for you. However, if you liked Fleabag, it is.
