Gareth Southgate OBE, Football Manager
Summary
Gareth Southgate is the most successful England men's football manger in the modern game. He holds the record as the man who has represented England in more games than anyone else, with 102 games as men's senior team manager, 57 caps as a player and 37 as men's under-21 head coach, leading to a total of 196 games in which he has been involved as a player or coach. He talks to Lauren Laverne about his life and career and selects eight favourite recordings to take to the BBC's mythical island
Review
Matt Glasby
Britain’s longest-running radio show welcomes England’s most successful men’s football manager, Gareth Southgate. Having stepped down this summer after Euro 24, it’s a good time to reflect on his life and career.
He talks to Lauren Laverne about kindness in sport, that inspiring “Dear England” letter and the time Ed Sheeran gave his players a private concert. Whether it’s too soon to cue up Three Lions is anyone’s guess.
