The John Wilson Prom is always a season highlight. In 2022, he presented an all-British programme; this year he and his excellent Sinfonia of London have gone all-American. They open with Wynton Marsalis’s Herald, Holler and Hallelujah!, a fanfare for brass and percussion that will be new to many. We’ll be on more familiar terrain with Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (now 100 years old), and it’ll be interesting to hear the precision they will bring to such well-known works.
My senses will be primed for immersion in John Adams’s Harmonielehre. Expect only a hint of minimalism. This 1985 piece is opulent, urgent, dream-like and, in John Wilson’s possession, should be quite a ride.
