Summary

Celebrated Norwegian crime novelist Jo Nesbo introduced homicide detective Harry Hole in his 1997 book The Bat and has written a further 12 mysteries featuring the anti-hero. A gritty nine-part thriller immortalises the brilliant but tormented character on screen in a ferocious battle of wits against a supposed colleague. Harry (Tobias Santelmann) has always been clear which side of the law he operates on and he maintains that focus as he pursues a serial killer. However, ethical lines of the criminal justice system become blurred when Harry goes head-to-head with his long-time adversary, corrupt detective Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman). Harry struggles with his demons as he vows to bring Waaler to justice, at an unacceptably high personal cost.

Detective-novel fans have been waiting for this: Norwegian crime king Jo Nesbø brings his alcoholic Oslo rule-breaker Harry Hole to TV.

In a series that starts off looking like a version of the 2002 book Nemesis but then soon throws in elements from other Hole stories, Tobias Santelmann ramps up the bad-boy shtick as the titular sleuth, a man obsessed with a brutal bank robbery from years ago that led to Hole’s actions getting a colleague killed. When creepy fellow detective Tom Waaler (Joel Kinnaman) is linked to the investigation, a deathly rivalry is born.

It’s bleak, horribly violent on occasion and is unafraid of either genre cliché or overcooked machismo, but the idea of one man’s dark heart fighting against a cruel world and his own demons makes it compelling.
