It’s not all that long since we left the world of Stranger Things behind, but we’re already back for the sci-fi series’ first spin-off. But it feels wrong to call it that considering it has the same characters, setting and broad story as the main live-action season three live-action series, only animated.

Once again we’re in Hawkins, Indiana, with Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin and Max hunting Upside-Down monsters, while their mate Eleven uses her telekinetic powers to help. It’s just happening a little earlier, with the story set in early 1985, a few months before the start of the live-action season three (which released in 2019).

Still, this does allow for Tales from ’85’s main selling point – the kids are cute and young again! The animated style of this series allows Netflix to step back in time and have the gang become precocious little monster-hunters again. It helps that the brand new voice cast do passable imitations of the original actors. Huw Fullerton
