This is a drama to be filed under Regional Apocalypse: when aliens invade Scotland or floods batter Bradford… here, the possible end-times are in Wales. During a heatwave that’s a mere aperitif for the climate crisis to come, grieving psychologist Gabs (Ruth Madeley) meets a new patient, Bethany (India Amarteifio).
Sectioned two years earlier for matricide, Bethany – who epitomises Mean Girls meeting Hannibal Lecter – maintains her innocence. Gabs attributes it to denial, as does everyone else including Bethany’s dad – charismatic cult leader Leonard (Sam Hazeldine). Until, that is, Gabs discovers that Bethany can draw alarmingly accurate images of future events. Gabs is gobsmacked but intrigued.
With interventions from environmental activists, and the machinations of a sinister multinational fossil fuel giant, there may be a bit too much going on. But if these are indeed end-times, they may well have to fit everything in.
