Review

Jack Seale

The work of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who made 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, at first The Afterparty is a snappy dramedy about a high-school reunion in a million-dollar house that ends with the death of the most famous attendee, a pop star. The ensemble cast includes Ilana Glazer from Broad City and, stepping confidently into US telly, Jamie Demetriou from Stath Lets Flats, and there’s a funny turn from Tiffany Haddish as the investigating cop.

The format is the star, though: not only does it retell the story in every episode from a different character’s perspective, it changes genre to do it, shifting from high-school movie to Fincher-esque thriller to, in one instalment, animation. It’s impressively clever.
