The Free Guy team of Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds riff knowingly on ET, Starman, Star Wars and Back to the Future in this fast-moving time-travel adventure. Reynolds's rebellious pilot, Adam Reed, crashes into the life of his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell), while trying to find his missing wife (Zoe Saldana) and save the future from his late father's ruthless business partner (Catherine Keener). Levy gives everyone space to shine, including Jennifer Garner as Adam's mother, who quietly grieves for her dead husband (Mark Ruffalo). However, it's Reynolds's show, as he blends sarcasm and sincerity with softness and strength, while the impressive Scobell is every bit his quippy equal. The action scenes, exhilaratingly set to classic rock, are dynamic and punchy, but the meat is in the quieter moments, where the themes of regret, grief, love, and loss movingly play out. A distractingly unreal, de-aged version of Keener aside, The Adam Project is a delight, hitting the sweet spots of head, heart, and funny bone in ways that are silly, wise and playful.
