Episode 1: Alexander Armstrong in Sri Lanka
Summary
Alexander heads for the paradise isle of the Indian Ocean, exploring its golden sands and historic culture, from the Sinhalese areas in the central and southern regions to the less-travelled Tamil north. His first port of call is the fortress town of Galle, built by the Portuguese in 1588. Later, he finds out about captive elephants at a foundation where he meets a majestic elephant that has been rescued
Review
Jane Rackham
“That’s an arresting little tableau,” says Alexander Armstrong in his typically understated way as he surveys a terrifying depiction of the underworld in a Sri Lankan Buddhist temple.
He’s exploring the country’s eclectic culture so tries out as a choon pan man (a sort of mobile baker who advertises his wares with a Beethoven soundtrack), clears a mountain of elephant poo that will magically be turned into paper and tastes the infamous durian fruit as well as a fish-head curry.
He’s less sure about releasing his inner demons in an exorcism (did he ever have any?). But then Xander never minds sending himself up, which is probably why he also tries surfing.
