A couple decamping to a remote Scottish island to stay at a fusty old house lacking modern amenities appears to be fertile ground for Halloween horror. However, it’s the pagan festival of Samhain that is the inspiration here, a “cross-quarter day” not only marking the beginning of winter but also when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest.

Exposed to elemental forces, both natural and supernatural, the pair’s relationship soon comes under strain from a roaring storm and a skulking ghost from the past, in a suitably ominous offering infused with mythical tales and haunting songs.
