Keri Russell is back as one of TV’s most engaging protagonists: Kate Wyler, the American ambassador to the UK who, because her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) has become the Vice-President, and because she is manifestly overqualified for her role, is much more than just a ceremonial presence.

Now we continue where season three left off, with Kate having recommitted to her marriage, while also vowing to herself to curb the unpredictable Hal’s influence on the government. It looks like Hal and President Penn (Allison Janney) are on their way home, but when a protest blocks the M25 they’re redirected to hole up in Windsor Castle, which becomes the scene of a classic Diplomat comedy of manipulation and misread intentions.

The dialogue – clever and funny but sharpened with real emotional intelligence – is, as always, impeccable, but if the season appears a bit talky at first, a big surprise is on its way.
