Episode 4: Scott of the Antarctic

Summary

From Charles Frend, this 1948 drama tells the story of Robert Falcon Scott's failed attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole.

Review

Paul Whitelaw

Released in 1948, Scott of the Antarctic starred a perfectly cast John Mills as British explorer Robert Falcon Scott, whose ill-fated attempt to reach the South Pole is the stuff of tragi-heroic legend. This beautifully made Ealing Studios classic played a key role in cementing that legend in the public consciousness. It could so easily have been presented as a stiff-upper-lip melodrama, but opted instead for a subtle, documentary-like approach. A Sky Arts stalwart, Classic Movies is refreshingly straightforward. Host Ian Nathan and fellow film critics provide perceptive analysis with carefully chosen clips. That’s all you need.
