Food Unwrapped's Deep South Adventure

Summary

Jimmy Doherty and Matt Tebbutt embark on an extraordinary road trip through America's Deep South. Starting on the Gulf Coast, in New Orleans, they discover how the shells from the huge number of oysters consumed locally could protect the coastline. Heading through Mississippi, Jimmy and Matt find out what makes southern sweet tea different from a British cuppa. In Alabama, Matt wants to know why they fry green tomatoes, and Jimmy uncovers exactly what grits are. Then it's off to Tennessee to visit the Jack Daniels distillery and discover the secrets of sour mash. In Louisville, where the South meets the North, Jimmy and Matt learn about fast-food consistency at Kentucky Fried Chicken HQ

Review

Gabriel Tate

Jimmy Doherty and Matt Tebbutt are hardly the first chefs to take a culinary tour of America’s southern states, but what distinguishes this from similar trips by Jamie Oliver, the Hairy Bikers et al is their proudly nerdy interest in manufacture and technique over recipes.

Expect insights into the appeal and production of the area’s staples, including Alabaman grits, Tennessee whiskey and fried green tomatoes. Their game attempts to discover the secret recipe behind Kentucky Fried Chicken are inevitably rebuffed and they aren’t immune to the occasional yee-haw cliché, but the welcomes they receive are warm and their enthusiasm is genuine.
