As fresh vegetables on supermarket shelves are starting to feel like a distant memory, here’s a chance to remind ourselves what they look like. Andi Oliver investigates why asparagus gives us pungent pee and heads for an onion factory to see how the eye-watering allium gets peeled on an industrial scale. Hopefully she’s packed enough hankies.

Also in tonight’s edition, Amanda Byram finds out what happens to the ten million pumpkins that end up being dumped in Britain every year post-Halloween, Matt Tebbutt learns why the shelf life for bagged vegetable stir-fry mixes is so short and Briony May Williams discovers why some radishes are hotter than others. Salad days indeed.
