The changing social history of postwar London’s East End, seen through the eyes of midwives and nuns stationed at a nursing convent in the deprived district of Poplar. Cherished as a Sunday-evening favourite, the series was based in its early years on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, whose day-to-day midwifery dramas were adapted for the screen by Heidi Thomas (I Capture the Castle, Cranford).
Praised for tackling such emotive issues as stillbirth and the thalidomide scandal, Thomas’s scripts embody an “iron fist in a velvet glove” approach to storytelling, their often-radical commentary cloaked in the aesthetics of period nostalgia. It’s a delicate balance that has won Call the Midwife an army of loyal followers.
