Review
Jane Rackham
Inspired by the 1996 Oscar-winning Coen brothers’ crime film Fargo, this ten-part drama mines the same darkly humorous and casually violent seam as the original.
Martin Freeman is terrific as the downtrodden Minnesota insurance salesman whose suppressed anger explodes after he accidentally gets caught up with a sadistic hitman (Billy Bob Thornton at his quietly menacing best). It’s stylish, bleak and confidently takes its time setting up the plot.
Despite the bloody murders, it portrays the “Minnesota nice” traits of courtesy and understatement perfectly. No pratfalls or witty one-liners, but you’ll yelp with laughter at the more shocking scenes. Fans of the Coen brothers (who executive-produced) will love it.
