England v DR Congo

Summary

England v DR Congo (Kick-off 5.00pm). Coverage of the round-of-32 match at Atlanta Stadium in the USA. England came through Group L unbeaten, following wins against Croatia and Panama, and a goalless draw with Ghana, but have so fallen short of the sort of performances needed if they are to progress deep into the competition. Their opponents have reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history, sealing their spot with a 3-1 win against Uzbekistan, in which Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa scored twice

Review

England continue their World Cup campaign as Thomas Tuchel’s side face DR Congo in the round of 32 in Atlanta.

The Three Lions topped Group L on seven points after beating Croatia and Panama while drawing with Ghana; however, many fans were left unconvinced by their performances. Today‘s game could be another tough watch, given DR Congo’s success at the World Cup has been based on a deep defence and threat on the break. The African side, who drew against Portugal and beat Uzbekistan in Group K to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, are into the knock-out stages for the first time in their history.

If England win they’ll face either Mexico or Ecuador in the round of 16 in the early hours of Monday morning. That would then set up a potential quarter-final showdown against Brazil.
