Portugal v Spain

Summary

Portugal v Spain (Kick-off 8.00pm). Coverage of the fifth round-of-16 match, which takes place at Dallas Stadium in the USA. Portugal finished second in their group, below Colombia and above DR Congo and Uzbekistan with two draws and a win before coming back from behind in their round-of-32 match with Croatia to prevail 2-1. Spain got off to a disappointing start with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, but they are still yet to concede in this tournament, having followed that result up with wins against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in the group stage, before comfortably defeating Austria 3-0 in the next round. However, this is likely to be their toughest test so far, and the last meeting between the Iberian rivals saw Portugal win on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final of the 2024/25 UEFA Nations League in Germany

Ned Holmes

A place in the World Cup quarter-finals is up for grabs when neighbours Portugal and Spain face off in a blockbuster battle on Monday evening.

There’s also the intriguing subplot of two of the sport’s biggest names meeting at opposite ends of their careers as 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo attempts to extend his final World Cup campaign and 18-year-old Lamine Yamal looks to make his mark in his first global tournament.
