Episode 1: Spyfall - Part One

Summary

The time traveller returns for a fresh set of adventures, beginning with a two-part story. When intelligence agents around the world come under attack from alien forces, MI6 turns to the only people who can help - a certain Doctor and her companions. As they travel the globe in pursuit of answers, threats arrive from all sides, leaving Earth's security resting on the team's shoulders. But where will this planet-threatening conspiracy lead them? Jodie Whittaker, Tosin Cole, Bradley Walsh and Mandip Gill star, with guest appearances from Stephen Fry and Lenny Henry

Review

Huw Fullerton

What’s this? The Doctor, having cast off her trademark rainbow T-shirt, has swapped it for a tuxedo under her long grey coat. Dastardly villains have a plot against the intelligence services, while attacks around the globe put Earth’s security in danger. In the planet’s time of greatest need, there’s only one person a plummy-voiced spymaster called C can turn to.

“The name’s Doctor… the Doctor.”

Yes, this is Who’s riff on James Bond – though if the episode title hasn’t tipped you off (it’s called Spyfall, after Daniel Craig’s Skyfall), you’re probably not cut out to be 007 yourself.

Written by showrunner Chris Chibnall and with starry guest turns from Stephen Fry (as the aforementioned spy boss, in brilliant casting) and Lenny Henry, this is an explosive start to Jodie Whittaker’s second series. And given that this is part one of a two-part episode, don’t be too surprised if there’s a bit of a cliffhanger…
