Our Lives: Ashington AFC: Saving Our Club

Summary

A look at how a tight-knit group of volunteers are aiming to keep the Northumberland-based semi-professional football club afloat. Formed back in 1883 in a town that once became known as the largest coal mining village in the world and produced World Cup-winning brothers Jack and Bobby Charlton, the club are facing financial strain despite reaching their highest position in the Northern Premier League East for 55 years

Whether it’s a punk band made up of women in their 50s and 60s (the real Riot Women) or the country’s first disabled racing driver, this series celebrating extraordinary people from around the UK winkles out some incredible stories.

It starts with the football club that produced Bobby and Jack Charlton: Ashington AFC. The Northumberland team, founded in 1883, relies on the fundraising efforts of volunteers – including chair Nicola, director Brian and board member Drew – to operate because it doesn’t have the luxury of a wealthy sponsor. However, with the possibility of relegation, it’s not just financial pressure that threatens the squad’s future.
