This year has seen relatively little first-hand reporting from the war in Ukraine. Boris Johnson does his bit to remedy that with a feature-length documentary in which he returns to his journalistic roots to report from the conflict’s “kill zone”, near the south-eastern front line. It takes a moment to adjust to our former PM as a war correspondent, muttering “Really?” or “How amazing!” in the face of stark testimony from people he meets. These include anti-aircraft gunners, drone operators, and DIY engineers assembling bombs and mines. The latter show him the vape-sized “toe-popper” mines, powerful enough to blow a Russian soldier’s foot off, but not kill them.

Most of all, Boris is struck by Ukrainians’ tough fighting spirit: “I see how you defeated Napoleon and everybody else.”
