Perhaps it’s time for a new approach to understanding the story of Pompeii and Vesuvius. Actor and classicist Tom Hiddleston certainly thinks so. Pacing next to a pinboard covered in maps and images of the city, he wonders if there’s another way to see the past. “Evidence,” he says, holding up one fist, “…and imagination.” He holds up the other fist, then clasps them together. “…intermingled. They’re the same thing!”

Hmm… are they, though? If quibbles like that bother you, you won’t get far with Hiddleston’s series. Set them aside and it opens an empathetic, semi- dramatised route back to AD 79 and the fates of three real Pompeiians who survived the eruption, their experiences re-created with actors in Via Coronationis sequences.

Hiddleston is a knowledgeable guide. He has been fascinated by Pompeii since he visited as a teenager, and he read Classics at Cambridge so he has enough Latin to translate inscriptions for us. He also has experts on hand, including a psychologist who offers insights on how people tend to behave in extremis. It all builds into a vivid mosaic of the disaster.
