In its 11th year, this elder statesperson of competitive TV can afford to relax the rules and have a little fun. Tonight, for instance, one contestant invites a sitter to contribute to their portrait — so in effect, they see it before the big reveal. Anyway, no harm done, and it’s a nice moment. The famous folk are musician Self Esteem, NHS surgeon Dr Karan Rajan and the Marchioness of Bath — and one of them finds it unbearable not being able to use their mobile.

The methodology is always compelling — one artist uses a step-by-step guide — some of the in-progress works look amazing in their own right, and at one point we hear two judges outvote the third…
